The Second Breakfast Company, still fresh in the local theatre scene, aims to revive a large and undiscovered canon of local texts and reestablish their relevance for a contemporary audience. Well, they’ve done a commendable job of it. This performance took me on a journey through the highs and lows of seventy-odd years of family politics, with bold directing choices that left me on the edge of my seat all the way till the show’s end…. I really enjoyed myself watching Family, and I am sincerely looking forward to the next course, Second Breakfast! Kudos to a great show. – Bakchormeeboy

Ultimately, The Wedding Pig does make a valiant attempt to showcase a believable dysfunctional family falling apart in the face of tragedy, remaining staunchly grounded and occasionally fun despite its dark undertones. Chelsea Cheo knows how to write the unique, private language between close knit family members that seems completely alien to outsiders but perfectly familiar between blood relations, and one hopes to see this further developed in future works. For now, The Wedding Pig is enjoyable enough for a glimpse of what Cheo is capable of, and certainly, is a good start to a future in theatre.” – Bakchormeeboy

Love Bites

A dramatised reading of local plays, old and new. Presented at Late Night Texting 2018.

25 August 2018

Centre 42 Black Box

Director: Adeeb Fazah, Mark Benedict Cheong

Cast:

Nur Hasyimah bte Hassan

Shannen Tan

“This was a rare chance to see older plays such as Lim Chor Pee’s Mimi Fan (performed to agonisingly camp soap opera levels by Kenneth Chia and and Nur Hasyimah bte Hassan) Haresh Sharma’s This Chord (And Others) brought to life, the latter of which was an unexpectedly brilliant appearance from 2BCo co-artistic director Mark Benedict Cheong who should absolutely appear onstage more often… Contemporary plays covered included Faith Ng’s Normal and Joel Tan’s Mosaic, both of which featured actress Shannen Tan whose surprisingly layered performances captured the rough-hewn exterior of her ‘ah lian’ characters, but also possessed a hint of vulnerability and softness lying underneath.” – Bakchormeeboy

“2BCo is making a commendable effort at growing increasingly professional with each production, and it’s heartening to see this young company’s ambition in staging a full revival of such a classic work.” – Bakchormeeboy

“The Second Breakfast Company is commendable in their efforts to produce oft-studied but less performed plays from the Singaporean literary canon like The Moon is Less Bright and Family by Leow Puay Tin. The company takes the literary and academic themes and issues muffled under the printed text and brings it forth into an immediate and live present… their restaging of The Moon is Less Bright addresses the perennially important issues of social inequality while commenting on the differences with our current situation” – Arts Equator
